Celebrating One Year at Front Street: A Milestone Year and a Birthday Bash - Taking a leap of faith in opening an art studio.

This October marks a double celebration for me: my first anniversary at Front Street and my 60th birthday! It's a momentous occasion that I can't wait to share with you all.

Arrival at Front Street - opening an art studio.

What a year it has been! Last October, I moved into my new studio at Front Street, Dayton’s oldest and largest art district.

Before this, my art studio existed in various places around my home: my dining room table, basement, living room, spare bedroom, and even my covered porch—which I loved, weather permitting!

Unfortunately, none of these spaces allowed for meaningful interaction with other artists or collectors.

It wasn’t until I attended the 3rd Sunday event in August 2023 that I discovered the vibrant community at Front Street. I was blown away by the array of artists displaying their work, and I instantly felt at home.

When I inquired about available studios, I was fortunate enough to find a spot on the first floor, right inside the door with three large windows facing the parking lot. The natural light in this space is simply glorious!

On my very first First Friday, in October 2023, I was still moving in. My artwork was not even hung up; it was lined up along the wall, sitting on the floor.

I had no idea what to expect, but I knew I was taking a leap of faith. That night, I met what felt like hundreds of people—though it was probably closer to fifty! By the end of the evening, I was completely exhausted but exhilarated.

Creative Growth and New Experiences in my art studio

Over the past year, I have met so many incredible artists, all of whom are wonderful people. Being right by the front door has facilitated countless interactions, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know everyone who walks by. This creative environment has undoubtedly fueled my artistic growth.

I found a new passion for creating art from salvaged building materials and am just so lucky to have a supplier right here in the building, Restoration Leftovers. From this, the Pillars of Hope took shape. Proceeds from these art forms are donated to the Dayton Dream Center.

To foster a hopeful atmosphere, I created a Hope board that hangs on the outside wall of my studio, where everyone is invited to share their words of hope for all to benefit.

With a dedicated space away from my pets, I’ve been able to experiment with new mediums, including more texture and resin, which have transformed my work.

Reflecting on this year, I’ve experienced a series of exciting firsts:

  • I was interviewed by Dayton 24/7 Now on Small Business Saturday.

  • Featured by street photographer Scott Davis of Scotty Dfoto.

A Milestone Birthday Celebration in my art studio.

Turning 60 is a significant milestone for me, both personally and professionally. It’s a time for reflection, and I’ve come to appreciate the lessons learned over the years. As I step into this new chapter, I feel invigorated and ready to embrace the future.

Conclusion

Looking back on this past year, I feel immensely grateful for the connections I’ve made and the creative growth I’ve experienced. For the first time in my life, I truly feel connected to other creatives, and I’m having the time of my life in my studio, my happy place.

I've met so many women, likely around my age, who once dreamed of being artists but took different paths. If you feel it's too late to pursue your passion, let me assure you: it’s never too late to start. A mentor of mine always says, “If not now, when?” Let that thought inspire you to take the leap.

Let me know if you would like to come and create with me.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported me on this journey—my fellow artists, the Front Street community, and all of you who interact with my work both online and in person.

I encourage you to visit my studio and celebrate with me on October 4th. Join me at the Front Street Artist Community, 1001 E 2nd St, Dayton, Ohio, 45402. I can't wait to celebrate this special occasion with you all!

Looking forward to what this next year has to offer.
